Describe what you do in one paragraph

Vanessa is a musical collective formed around producer Arne Nuyts, drummer Louis Vandommele and dj Brecht Nijssen. A three-headed band influenced by funk, electronica, hiphop, house, afrobeat and general beatmaking. A dancefloor equivalent of a jazz combo.

What are you planning to do during your take-over?

We’ll be kicking off with Vanessa performing a slightly remixed version of their usual live set, customized to fit the tiny space that is Radio Ruit.

Second in line is Soft Focus, who’s doing a live improvisation by taking elements, loops and sounds from his recently released debut album.

Following that, Vanessa’s in-house producer Elmo Huu is premiering an experimental yet funky live set formed around all kinds of percussive loops and other oddball sounds.

Berthold, dj and one-third of Vanessa, will be playing some records to round off the day in a laid-back fashion.

Who's your guest?

Soft-Focus, also known as TITLE, is a severely underrated producer that is genuinely praised by the likes of Gilles Peterson, The Gaslamp Killer and Lefto. This multi-instrumentalist just released his debut album ‘Flowers’ on DTM Funk’s San-Kofa Rhythms Records, which contains a collection of tracks that are shaped over the years and started from improvisation with different loops. Soft Focus is a project that represents his unspecific and spontaneous approach to music production, derived from any expectations or stress.

How will you provide the visual or creative aspect?

Ada Güvenir, a wonderfully talented illustrator and Vanessa’s rehearsal space roomie, will be directing the scenography by transforming the Radio Ruit studio into her own, hand-drawn world. (@adaguvenir on instagram)
